Assoc. Prof. Jim Peterson (1939 – 2012)This journal’s founder, Associate Professor Jim Peterson, died on January 23, 2012 after a long illness.

Jim was a much loved geography academic who inspired generations of students, and he was famous for conducting fieldwork in remarkably remote locations around the world.

Always an early adopter of new technologies, Professor Peterson’s enthusiasm for GIS and remote sensing knew no bounds, and this was what drove him to set up Applied GIS in early 2005.

Since then Applied GIS has published about seventy, often remarkable and massively downloaded papers, an achievement of which he was justly proud.

We miss him greatly.
